Lancaster 13 – 18 York
Following an unbelievable performance from last year’s match (a thriller which Lancaster won 31-30), the Cat’s 2nd team looked to go out and really put the exclamation point on what has been a fantastic season for the club. What had started as a disappointing day for the club, with the 3’s losing earlier in close fashion, only got worse as the 2nd team came second-best in what was a well-fought and tight-knit encounter throughout. Despite a couple of well-kicked penalties from #10 Ryan McFall and one of the strangest scores all weekend from hooker Ben Evans (well-rewarded for some tireless running all game), the home team couldn’t find their groove and gather any sort of momentum. Lancaster looked most dangerous out-wide, wingers Toby Holt and Adam Cowan both making good yards when given the opportunity but a sharp York defence managed to limit these chances to being few and far-between.
After the match, we spoke to Captain Matthew Stoddart who said ‘Obviously it was disappointing not to come away with the third consecutive win for the 2s, but the boys really put their all in, and gave it everything they had: you can’t ask for anything more than that! That being said you could see what the club means to everyone during the 1s game – we may have lost the battle but we won the war’.
